An obligation [(2)] if they attack, so the woman and the slave leave without permission[(3)]); For if the infidels attack a [(4)] of the frontiers, it becomes an individual obligation for whoever [(1)] approaches it, and they are able[(2)] to wage jihad. As for those behind them, if the news reaches them, it becomes an individual obligation upon them [(3)] if they are needed, because it is feared for those who were close to them, that they are unable to resist, or that they were not unable, but were lazy, and then until it becomes an individual obligation for all the people of Islam, east and west. If the closest ones perform it, or some of them, then everyone is forfeited, and if it reaches the farthest that the closest(5) have lost his right[(6)], then the furthest must perform it, and if he abandons all, then everyone to whom the news of his death reaches will become a sinner.

When accepting the jizyah, we do not command them (1) to perform acts of worship, as we command Muslims. Rather, what is meant is that it is obligatory for them and obligatory for us upon them if we are exposed to their blood and wealth, or they are exposed to our blood and wealth, as we are obligated [(2)] to each other upon aggression; This is because before accepting the jizyah, we were exposed to their blood and wealth, and they were exposed to our blood and our wealth, so accepting the jizyah is only due to the removal of this exposure[(3)]. This is supported by[(4)] that they made the evidence for this ruling the saying of Ali(5) [(1)] - may God be pleased with him - but they sacrificed the jizyah; Let their blood be like our blood and their money be like our money.
